Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

This is the most advanced treatment for varicose veins and vein disease. In the past, varicose veins were treated with a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg. Today, endovenous laser ablation procedure is used to deliver laser wavelength heat energy into the malfunctioning large varicose veins to seal it closed. It’s precise, painless, and quick. This procedure is performed in the outpatient setting of our comfortable office at the laser vein removal center.

In preparation for the Laser Vein Ablation procedure, an ultrasound machine is used to examine and map out the shape and size of the veins in your legs. This venous map allows our physician to accurately locate the unhealthy veins that need to be treated. Our vein laser clinic will also provide you with a personalized treatment plan that will include the estimated number of treatments that your leg may require.

During the endovenous laser therapy procedure technology at the laser vein clinic, you are awake and your leg is numbed with a local anesthetic. A small nick in the skin is made in the leg near the location of the unhealthy vein to prevent scarring. A thin fiber-optic probe is inserted through a needle into the vein using ultrasound guidance.

A highly concentrated beam of light from the laser heats the vein walls from the hot temperature which makes them shrink. This causes the unhealthy vein to collapse. The precision of the laser allows the physician to target the vein without affecting the surrounding tissue. Once the vein is sealed, it slowly disintegrates while being absorbed by the surrounding soft tissues. The other healthy veins in your leg will then take relief and take over the normal blood flow toward the heart.

Following the procedure at the laser vein center, a simple bandage is placed over the insertion site, and additional compression will be provided to aid healing. Patients are encouraged to walk, and to refrain from extended standing and strenuous activities for a period of time. Patients who undergo this procedure typically experience short recovery times and resume normal activities within a day with no side effects and are mostly pain free. This alternative procedure to old surgery methods has the best before and after results.
